What Reiki is

An old practice, plainly described.

Reiki is a gentle hands-on — or hands-near — complementary practice. The session is quiet and unhurried, and it is designed to support relaxation and rest.

The word is Japanese, formed from two characters: rei, meaning universal, and ki, meaning life force. The practice was developed in the early twentieth century by Mikao Usui and travelled from Japan to the West in the mid-twentieth century. It is now one of the most widely practised complementary modalities in the world.

In a session the practitioner rests their hands on or just above the body, moving through a sequence of positions. Practitioners describe their role as holding space rather than doing something to you. There is nothing you need to concentrate on and nothing to get right.

Reiki is not a medical treatment. It is a complementary practice, received alongside your existing health care rather than in place of it.

What happens on the day

Arrive, settle, rest.

You arrive a few minutes early and settle in. Frederica sits down with you briefly to ask what you would like from the hour and whether there is anything she should know.

Then you rest, fully clothed, on a treatment table. Frederica works with light touch, or with her hands held just above the body if you prefer — you can say so at the start or change your mind partway through. Most of the session is quiet.

At the end there is time to sit up slowly and have a glass of water before you drive home. Nobody is hurried out.

Experiences vary from person to person. Some people notice warmth or a gentle heaviness; some find the hour deeply restful; some drift close to sleep. Terra Lume makes no promise about what yours will be.

What a session includes

The hour, and what surrounds it.

A preparation guide

Sent one to two days beforehand — what to wear, how to reach the hall, where to park, and a few simple suggestions for arriving unhurried.

The session

A full 60 minutes on the table, with a short conversation before and unhurried time at the end.

Aftercare notes

Written notes sent that evening or the following morning — how to look after yourself for the next day or two.

A personal check-in

Frederica checks in with you two days later. Not an automated message — a real one.

Scepticism welcome

You do not have to believe anything in particular to lie down for an hour and rest.

Some people arrive with a long relationship to this work. Others arrive frankly unconvinced and mostly interested in an hour that asks nothing of them. Both are welcome, and neither is better prepared than the other.

What most people agree on afterwards is simpler than the debate: an hour of complete permission to stop turns out to be surprisingly rare.

Suitability

Who Reiki suits.

Reiki is a gentle practice considered appropriate for most people.

If you have a current health condition, are pregnant, or are undergoing medical treatment, please mention this when you book. The booking form asks a few straightforward questions, and Frederica will be in touch if there is anything to discuss before your appointment is confirmed.

Reiki is not diagnostic. Frederica does not assess, diagnose or comment on health conditions, and nothing in a session is a reason to change or stop treatment you are already receiving.

If you are unsure whether Reiki is appropriate for you, please speak with your doctor or treating practitioner before booking. Your answers on the booking form are used only to make your session safe and comfortable, and are held in accordance with the Terra Lume Privacy Policy.

The practitioner

Frederica Dillon

Frederica has practised Reiki for five years, and lives and works on the Tasman Peninsula in southern Tasmania.

Her wider background includes yoga teacher training, ontological coaching and art therapy practitioner training, alongside a professional career in communications and brand strategy — a long time spent in the quiet work of noticing what happens when people slow down and give themselves room.

She is also training in Biofield Tuning through BioSona. Terra Lume is where those threads meet: a small, carefully held complementary wellbeing practice, run with the care she would want herself.

Questions

Asked plainly, answered plainly.

Is this a medical treatment?
No. Reiki is a complementary wellbeing practice. It does not diagnose, treat or cure any medical condition and is not a substitute for medical or psychological care. If you have a health concern, please speak with a qualified health professional.
Do I need to believe in Reiki for it to be worthwhile?
No particular belief is required. Many people arrive simply curious, or looking for an hour of rest. Scepticism is welcome and does not need to be resolved before you book.
What should I wear?
Comfortable clothing you can rest in easily. You stay fully clothed throughout the session. A blanket is available if you would like one.
What do I actually do during the session?
You lie on the treatment table and rest. There is nothing to concentrate on and nothing to get right. Some people talk a little at the start and then go quiet; some drift close to sleep. All of it is fine.
Do you have to touch me?
No. Frederica works with light touch by default, or with her hands held just above the body if you prefer. Tell her at the start, or say so partway through — changing your mind mid-session is completely normal and nothing needs explaining.
How does a distance session work?
You set aside the same 60 minutes and rest somewhere comfortable at home. There is no video call to attend. Frederica works at the agreed time, and the preparation guide, aftercare notes and two-day check-in are the same as an in-person session.
Can I book if I have a medical condition, or if I am pregnant?
In most cases yes. Please mention it when you book — the booking form asks. Frederica will be in touch if there is anything to discuss before your appointment is confirmed, and may occasionally suggest you check with your treating practitioner first.
How might I feel afterwards?
Responses vary widely. Some people feel deeply rested; others feel clear-headed or reflective; some notice very little. There is no correct response. Aftercare notes follow that evening or the next morning, and Frederica checks in two days later.
What is your cancellation policy?
We ask for at least 24 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule. Cancellations with less than 24 hours' notice are charged 50% of the session fee; missed appointments are charged in full. If something unexpected happens, please contact Frederica directly.
Where are the in-person sessions held?
At two places on the Tasman Peninsula — Eaglehawk Neck, at the gateway to the peninsula and roughly an hour from Hobart, and Nubeena, further down the peninsula. Both have plenty of parking, and you choose which one when you book. The address and full directions come with your preparation guide once your session is confirmed.
